Nifty Slides Below 22,550 as Auto Stocks Face Selling Pressure

Indian markets opened with a bearish tone on October 1, 2026, as the Nifty 50 slipped amid persistent foreign institutional selling and global economic concerns. While IT and private banking shares showed resilience, the auto sector faced significant pressure following disappointing monthly sales figures. Investors are currently monitoring immediate support levels as global bond yields weigh on sentiment.

Indian equity markets started October on a weak note, with the Nifty 50 index falling below the 22,550 mark. The benchmark index opened with a gap-down, while the Sensex declined by approximately 225 points in early trade. The broader market sentiment remains cautious, largely influenced by the ongoing trend of foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows and elevated US bond yields, which continue to create uncertainty for emerging market equities.

Sectoral trends provided a stark contrast during the session. The auto sector emerged as a significant drag on the indices. Shares of major automakers, including Bajaj Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra, saw notable selling pressure in early trading. This negative movement followed the release of September domestic sales data, which indicated weaker-than-expected demand in the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments.

Conversely, the Nifty IT index provided some cushion to the broader market, posting gains of approximately 1 percent to 1.7 percent. Infosys stood out as a primary contributor to this resilience. Similarly, the Nifty Private Bank index maintained a steady performance. A key development in this space was the rise in Kotak Mahindra Bank shares, which gained following the announcement that the Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Anup Kumar Saha as the new Managing Director and CEO, effective January 1, 2027.

From a technical perspective, the market continues to exhibit bearish momentum. Analysts note that with the index hovering near recent lows, 22,500 remains a critical immediate support level. If the current selling pressure persists, the market may test further support zones around 22,400 and 22,200. The combination of local auto sales data and global macroeconomic headwinds has created a challenging environment for short-term sentiment.

Investors looking ahead will likely focus on the volume of FII activity, as consistent selling from this group has been a primary headwind for Indian indices in recent sessions. Additionally, global cues regarding bond yields and commodity prices will remain important factors in determining whether the market can recover from these lower levels or if the consolidation phase continues.
