Nifty Set to Open Near 24,000 as SEBI Reviews Auction Rules

Indian markets are expected to open with a gap-up of over 130 points, potentially reclaiming the 24,000 level after four days of declines. This recovery follows a rebound in global markets and lower US bond yields. Meanwhile, the market regulator, SEBI, has announced a review of the recently introduced Closing Auction Session to address reported trading disorders.

Indian equity markets are poised for a positive start on Friday, September 4, 2026, with the GIFT Nifty indicating a gap-up opening of approximately 130 points. This anticipated move suggests the Nifty 50 could climb back above the 24,000 mark after suffering a four-session losing streak, which left the index at 23,873.45 in the previous session.

The recovery is primarily driven by improved sentiment in international markets. Major US indices posted gains overnight, and there has been a retreat in US Treasury yields, which typically provides a cushion for emerging market equities. Despite the positive setup, investors are keeping a close watch on persistent macro pressures. Brent crude oil remains elevated near $97 per barrel, and ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to fuel uncertainty about commodity costs and global economic stability.

Alongside the market movement, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has officially acknowledged the need to refine the Closing Auction Session (CAS), which was implemented in August 2026. Several market participants had raised concerns regarding trading disorders under the current system, which plays a critical role in setting daily closing prices and influencing derivative settlements. The regulator plans to release a consultation paper within the coming week. This document will detail proposed changes to the methodology, aiming to resolve operational friction and improve the reliability of the closing mechanism.

While the market looks to recover, traders remain alert to potential profit-taking. The zone between 24,000 and 24,200 is viewed by many as a resistance area where selling pressure may emerge if the index fails to hold its gains. Investors are also monitoring signals from the US Federal Reserve, with the market awaiting further clarity on future policy paths ahead of upcoming non-farm payroll data. The primary focus for the trading session will be whether the index can sustain its morning gains or if external macro headwinds—specifically volatile oil prices and global geopolitical uncertainty—trigger a reversal.
