Nifty Reclaims 23,000; Reliance and IT Stocks Lead Rally

Indian indices rose on October 21, with the Nifty crossing the 23,000 mark. The rally was driven by strong earnings from IT companies and rapid investor interest in the new Jio Platforms IPO. Despite index gains, broader market sentiment remained cautious as many stocks saw declines.

Indian stock markets saw a positive session on October 21, with benchmark indices rallying significantly. The Sensex climbed 500 points, while the Nifty successfully reclaimed the 23,000 level. This momentum was primarily driven by heavy buying in large-cap technology stocks and Reliance Industries, helping offset a mixed performance in the broader market.

The Information Technology sector was the biggest contributor to the day's gains, with the sectoral index rising 2.2%. L&T Technology Services led this sector after announcing a strong performance for the second quarter. The company reported a revenue of Rs 3,040 crore compared to Rs 2,713 crore in the same period last year, while net profit grew 19.6% to Rs 380 crore. Shares of the company jumped 10.5% following these results. Other major IT firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services also saw gains of around 3%, signaling improved sentiment for the sector.

Reliance Industries shares also supported the rally, closing 2% higher. A major factor behind this positive sentiment was the launch of the Jio Platforms IPO, which aims to raise Rs 30,200 crore. The IPO saw strong demand, with the issue being fully subscribed within minutes of opening. This quick response from investors acted as a catalyst, helping the index maintain its critical support level at 23,000.

While the index leaders showed strength, the broader market breadth was more cautious. More than 2,200 stocks recorded declines, while only 1,116 shares managed to advance, indicating that the rally was concentrated among a few heavyweights. In terms of individual stock movements, Bajaj Finance dropped 1.5% as investors reacted to its latest quarterly financial update. Conversely, UltraTech Cement recovered to close 2% higher, moving past the selling pressure it faced in the previous session.

For investors, the current period remains focused on the ongoing quarterly earnings season. Market participants will likely watch for how companies manage rising costs and if demand holds steady across different sectors. The sustainability of the Nifty above the 23,000 mark, along with the progression of major IPOs, will be key factors to track in the coming days.
