The Nifty 50 index rose 1.6% on October 15, moving closer to the 23,000 mark as buying returned to key stocks. While the index is showing strength, the overall market breadth remains mixed with more stocks declining than advancing. Investors should watch the 22,776 level for further direction.
Benchmark indices saw a sharp recovery on October 15, with the Nifty 50 climbing 1.6% to near the 23,000 level. The BSE Sensex also jumped over 1,100 points, trading around the 73,926 mark. This move follows a period of decline over the last two months, bringing some relief to investors.
While the headline numbers look positive, the underlying market data shows a different picture. There is selective buying, meaning the index rise is driven by a few heavyweights rather than a broad rally across all stocks. Data shows over 2,200 stocks declined compared to about 1,545 that saw gains. This suggests that smaller and mid-sized stocks are not participating in the rally to the same extent as the large index components.
For investors tracking technical levels, analysts at Bajaj Broking point out that the 22,776 level on the Nifty is the immediate hurdle. If the index sustains a move above 22,800, it could act as a trigger to push the index toward the 23,000 to 23,100 zone. On the downside, the 22,450 to 22,500 range is currently acting as a strong support floor. A drop below this level could lead to renewed selling pressure.
The Sensex weekly expiry is adding to the market movement today. Strategy desks at HDFC Securities and Kotak Neo note that this event often creates sharper price swings as traders adjust their positions before the contract expires.
Looking ahead, the stability of the index above the 22,776 resistance level will be key for the market's direction. Investors should focus on price action in major index stocks and monitor whether the current gains can sustain, or if the index falls back into the consolidation range between 22,300 and 22,775.
