Nifty 50 Hits Six-Month Low As Eight-Week Losing Streak Holds

The Nifty 50 closed at 22,421.95, marking an eight-week consecutive decline—the longest such streak in 25 years. The drop is driven by consistent foreign investor selling and global economic pressure. Investors are now preparing for the upcoming Reserve Bank of India policy meeting to gauge the next direction for interest rates.

The Indian equity market is witnessing a prolonged period of weakness, with the Nifty 50 closing at 22,421.95. This decline marks an eight-week consecutive losing streak, the longest period of sustained selling in 25 years. The index has struggled to maintain momentum, reflecting deep-seated caution among investors as the broader market structure continues to face pressure.

A primary factor weighing on the market is the consistent selling by foreign institutional investors. In September 2026, these investors recorded their highest monthly outflow in six months. This sustained withdrawal of funds, combined with global economic challenges—such as elevated crude oil prices and rising United States bond yields—has kept the pressure on Indian equities. The weakening value of the Indian rupee has further complicated the situation, as it reduces the attractiveness of local assets for global investors.

Technical Levels And Volatility

The market’s technical health currently shows signs of stress. The Nifty 50 is testing critical support zones near 22,200. If the index fails to hold this level, it may lead to further downside movement. On the upper side, the index faces resistance in the 22,600 to 22,800 range, which acts as a ceiling for any potential recovery attempts. The India VIX, a measure of market fear and volatility, has surged more than 7 percent to 14.45. A higher VIX reading indicates that traders are preparing for more erratic price swings in the near term.

Focus Shifts To RBI Policy

With the market in a defensive position, the attention of investors is now shifting toward the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Monetary Policy Committee is set to hold its meeting from October 5 to October 7, 2026, with a final decision on interest rates expected on the last day. The market will be watching the central bank's commentary closely to understand its stance on inflation and liquidity. Any decision regarding interest rates can impact borrowing costs for companies, which in turn affects profit margins and investor sentiment.

Investors may monitor the 22,200 support level for signs of stability, alongside the outcome of the upcoming policy meeting. The performance of the index in the coming week will likely depend on whether these domestic policy cues can counteract the negative global factors that have dominated the recent trading sessions.
