The Nifty 50 index declined for the fourth straight session to close at 22,600, weighed down by rising crude oil costs and increased market volatility. Investors are watching the 22,400–22,350 zone, where the 200-week Exponential Moving Average acts as a critical support level. Meanwhile, the Bank Nifty index showed deeper weakness, falling 1.16% as key technical indicators signaled potential for further downside pressure.
The Indian stock market ended the week on a weak note, with the Nifty 50 closing at 22,600, a drop of 0.39% on Friday. This session marked the fourth consecutive day of decline, as sellers continued to dominate market activity. Rising crude oil prices, which have touched $115 a barrel, and an increase in the India VIX to 16.86 are adding to the negative sentiment among traders.
Investors are now looking closely at the 22,400–22,350 range. This area is significant because it aligns with the 200-week Exponential Moving Average (EMA). In technical terms, the EMA helps smooth out price data to identify the trend, and the 200-week version is often watched as a long-term support level. If the Nifty 50 fails to hold this zone, the index could face further pressure, with the next potential downside target around 22,180. On the upside, the index faces resistance—a level where selling usually increases—at 22,800.
The banking sector has shown even more weakness than the broader market. The Bank Nifty index fell 1.16% on Friday, sliding toward the 53,800–53,700 support area. Indicators for this sector are currently flashing warning signs, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI), a tool used to measure the speed and change of price movements, dropping below 40. Additionally, a bearish crossover on the MACD—another indicator of downward momentum—is signaling that the selling pressure might persist. A sustained move below these support levels could lead to further selling of positions by institutional traders, creating more downward drag on the broader index.
Investors tracking these developments should monitor whether the Nifty 50 can find stability at the 22,400 level during the upcoming trading sessions. The movement in crude oil prices and the stability of the India VIX will also be key factors to watch, as they often dictate the speed and intensity of market volatility throughout the monthly expiry period.
