Under the new guidelines, specific caps have been set for various index contracts. Bank Nifty and Nifty Next 50 contracts are now capped at 600 units per order. The widely traded Nifty and FinNifty indices have a higher limit of 1,800 units, while the Midcap Nifty index allows for up to 2,800 units in a single order. For the NiftyFPI index, the ceiling is set at 8,500 units.
These quantity freeze limits function as a safety mechanism. When an investor or a trading algorithm places an order that exceeds these specific thresholds, the exchange’s system automatically rejects it. This helps prevent accidental entry errors—often called "fat finger" mistakes where an incorrect, excessively large quantity is entered—and manages the processing load on the exchange's matching engine.
