NSE Q2 Profit Rises 23% to ₹2,578 Crore, Plans Stake Sale

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) reported a 23% year-on-year rise in Q2 FY27 consolidated profit to ₹2,578 crore, driven by strong trading volumes. The board also approved the divestment of up to 40% in the National Coal Exchange. Despite the growth, the exchange faces risks from its heavy reliance on options trading and potential regulatory changes.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has released its financial results for the quarter ending September 30, 2026, showcasing a robust year-on-year performance. The exchange posted a consolidated net profit of ₹2,578 crore, marking a 23% increase from the ₹2,098 crore recorded in the same quarter last year. Revenue from operations also saw growth, reaching ₹4,067 crore, an 11% rise compared to the previous year. This performance was primarily fueled by heightened activity in equity and derivatives markets, alongside contributions from listing services and data feeds.

The results highlight the exchange's role in the broader Indian market ecosystem. Transaction charges remain the backbone of the NSE's revenue model, supported by a 24% year-on-year increase in the Average Daily Traded Volume (ADTV) within the cash market. However, while the year-on-year growth remains strong, the figures show a sequential decline in both revenue and profit compared to the previous quarter, indicating a shift in trading intensity and market volatility.

Alongside the quarterly performance, the NSE board has initiated steps to streamline its business operations. The board approved the divestment of up to 40% stake in its wholly-owned subsidiary, the National Coal Exchange of India Limited. This strategic decision aligns with a broader trend of focusing on core exchange infrastructure and market operations.

While the financial results reflect the current bull-market sentiment, the exchange faces several business risks that investors should monitor. A significant portion of the NSE's revenue is dependent on options trading. Any regulatory shifts by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regarding derivatives trading norms could impact this income stream. Additionally, as an entity reliant on massive data processing, the NSE must consistently invest in cybersecurity and technological resilience to handle peak load demands and prevent potential system disruptions.

Looking ahead, the management's commentary regarding the coal exchange divestment and the sustainability of trading volumes will be key focus areas. Investors will likely watch for updates on how the exchange plans to diversify its revenue mix, given the potential risks associated with its concentration in options and derivatives trading.
