NSE International Exchange Moves to 23.5-Hour Trading

The NSE International Exchange (NSEIX) at GIFT City has officially expanded its trading window to 23.5 hours daily, effective November 2, 2026. Running from 3:15 a.m. to 2:45 a.m. IST, the new schedule aligns the exchange with global market hours to attract more international liquidity. This operational shift relies on upgraded technical systems designed to keep the exchange running with very little downtime.

The NSE International Exchange (NSEIX), located in GIFT City, has launched a near-continuous trading schedule. Starting November 2, 2026, the exchange is open for 23 hours and 30 minutes every day. This new trading window begins at 3:15 a.m. IST and concludes at 2:45 a.m. the following day, a change designed to bridge the time gaps between major financial markets in Asia, Europe, and the United States.

The core reason for this expansion is to make the exchange more accessible to global investors who operate in different time zones. By aligning its trading hours with international markets, the NSEIX aims to capture more trading activity and increase liquidity. This strategy is part of a broader effort to establish GIFT City as a prominent hub for international finance.

Running a market for 23.5 hours a day creates significant technical challenges. To make this possible, the exchange has overhauled its backend systems. A critical part of this upgrade is how the exchange handles maintenance. The systems are now configured to complete necessary updates in under three minutes between trading sessions and in less than 15 minutes for end-of-day processes. This speed is necessary because there is almost no time available for the market to be offline.

For participants, the primary monitorable will be the stability of these technical systems. When a market operates almost around the clock, there is little room for error or system delays. Any technical failure or lag could affect investor confidence and liquidity. Market participants will also be watching to see how trading volumes develop during these extended hours, as the success of this move depends on whether international investors choose to use the platform during non-traditional Indian market timings.

While this expansion opens new avenues for trade, it also brings the challenge of liquidity management. Maintaining deep and active markets for such a long period requires consistent participation. Investors may track whether the exchange can sustain high activity levels throughout the new, extended periods or if liquidity remains concentrated in traditional trading hours.
