NSE Gets IPO Nod: CEO Thanks SEBI Amid Record Domestic Inflows

National Stock Exchange (NSE) MD and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan has confirmed receipt of the regulatory No-Objection Certificate for the exchange's highly anticipated IPO. This milestone arrives as the Indian equity market shows resilience, with record domestic institutional inflows effectively offsetting over $19 billion in foreign investor outflows during FY26.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has cleared a major hurdle on the path to its public listing. At the 23rd FICCI Capital Markets Conference held on August 19, 2026, NSE Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan publicly thanked SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey for granting the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for the exchange's initial public offering. This acknowledgment marks a critical step forward after the exchange filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) earlier this year on June 17, 2026.

The upcoming IPO is structured as a pure Offer for Sale, meaning existing shareholders will be selling their stakes, and the exchange itself will not be raising fresh capital. While the NOC is a significant regulatory clearance, the process now moves toward final approvals and preparations for the market debut, which is reportedly being targeted for September 2026. For investors, the timeline and final valuation will be the next key updates to track as the exchange proceeds through the final procedural stages.

During his address, the NSE CEO highlighted a shift in the Indian market's foundation. He noted that while Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers of $19.77 billion in Indian equities during the 2026 fiscal year, the domestic market remained robust. Domestic Institutional Investors recorded net inflows of $95.8 billion in the same period, providing the necessary depth to absorb significant foreign capital outflows. This ability of the Indian market to self-finance and maintain stability despite global economic shifts is a central theme for current market watchers.

This trend is supported by a fundamental change in how Indian households manage their money. Data presented by the exchange shows that equity and mutual funds now account for 15.2% of annual household financial savings, a marked increase from just 1.8% in fiscal year 2012. This consistent flow of domestic capital into the stock market is seen as a stabilizer, helping the broader index withstand volatility caused by global geopolitical tensions or foreign investor sentiment.

Despite the positive progress regarding the IPO, investors should remain mindful of standard market risks. The final success of the listing depends on prevailing market conditions, which remain sensitive to global economic factors. Furthermore, while the NOC has been issued, the company must still navigate the final stages of the regulatory approval process. The market will also be monitoring how the exchange manages the transition from an unlisted entity to a public company, particularly regarding governance and operational transparency as it scales its digital and debt market infrastructure.
