Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) reported a net profit of ₹455 crore for the September quarter, more than doubling from the previous year. Revenue also rose sharply to ₹799.66 crore on the back of record-breaking trading volumes. Despite the strong performance, shares fell over 3% in trade as investors opted for profit booking following a recent rally.
Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) delivered a strong financial performance for the September quarter of fiscal year 2027. The exchange reported a consolidated net profit of ₹455 crore, a significant jump from the ₹197.47 crore recorded during the same period last year. This growth was supported by a substantial rise in total income from operations, which reached ₹799.66 crore, compared to ₹374.23 crore in the year-ago period.
The exchange's profitability was largely driven by a massive increase in market activity. Operational data for the quarter shows that the average daily turnover in the futures segment reached ₹62,819 crore, while the options segment saw a turnover of ₹12,00,129 crore. This level of market participation helped the company expand its profit margins significantly, with EBITDA margins improving to 76.4% from 65.1% in the corresponding period of the previous year. The exchange also noted strong physical settlement figures, including 5.68 tonnes of gold and 199.91 tonnes of silver, indicating deep liquidity in the metal segments.
Despite the positive financial results, the stock market reaction was muted. On November 4, 2026, shares of MCX faced downward pressure, falling over 3% to trade around the ₹3,272 mark. This movement is attributed to profit booking, where investors sell shares to lock in gains after a stock has seen a strong rally. It is a common occurrence in the market where traders react to the 'buy the rumor, sell the news' sentiment, even when the company reports solid numbers.
Looking ahead, the company’s ability to maintain this growth will depend on several factors. The business model of an exchange is highly sensitive to trading volumes and overall market volatility. When commodity prices are stable, trading activity can slow down, which directly impacts the revenue earned from transaction charges. Additionally, the exchange faces the constant need to invest in technological infrastructure to ensure smooth platform operations and prevent technical glitches, which can lead to increased spending.
Managing Director and CEO Praveena Rai has indicated that the exchange remains focused on product diversification and further technological upgrades to sustain high levels of participation. For investors, the key monitorables moving forward will be the sustainability of these trading volumes, the company's ability to manage costs related to its platform upgrades, and any potential changes in regulatory policies that could impact commodity market participation.
