Indian Stocks Edge Higher; Smallcaps Rally 2.5% Pre-Expiry

Indian stock markets erased early losses on Tuesday as the Nifty Smallcap 100 index jumped 2.5%, showing a shift in investor risk appetite. While benchmark indices managed slight gains, the market remained cautious due to the upcoming monthly derivatives expiry. Traders are currently monitoring heavy trading volumes and sectoral rotation away from defensive stocks.

Indian stock markets staged a recovery by midday on October 27, 2026, as investors moved away from defensive stocks to favor smaller companies. The broader market showed resilience, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 index surging 2.5%. This move highlights a clear appetite for risk, even as caution remains ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry.

By midday, the BSE Sensex rose 0.02% to reach 73,621.88, while the NSE Nifty50 recovered to 22,782.65, a gain of 0.13%. The market breadth was strongly positive on the BSE, with 2,945 stocks advancing against 1,140 declines, suggesting that the rally was widespread across smaller and mid-sized companies rather than just the heavyweights.

Investors are actively rotating capital between sectors. The Nifty IT index faced selling pressure, as traders moved money out of defensive sectors. In contrast, sectors like media, healthcare, pharma, and realty saw positive momentum, each climbing roughly 1%. Specific company updates also influenced stock prices, with Tata Consumer Products jumping 5.45% and BSE Limited rising 3.03%. Bajaj Auto shares climbed 2.70%, as traders built positions ahead of the company's upcoming quarterly earnings release.

Trading activity remains high as the monthly derivatives expiry approaches. Market participants are navigating a narrow range for the Nifty50. Technical data suggests a critical resistance zone for the index between 22,690 and 22,710. If the market fails to hold these levels, traders fear a retracement toward 22,380. Options data shows that many investors are using defensive strategies, with significant activity at the 22,500 strike, reflecting concerns about potential volatility in the final sessions of the month.

On the global and macroeconomic front, commodity prices are impacting sentiment. WTI crude oil prices have softened to $100.95 a barrel, influenced by diplomatic shifts in the Middle East that have reduced supply disruption fears for now. The Indian rupee traded with minor strength at 95.14 against the US dollar. Gold prices remained under pressure, with investors waiting for cues from the upcoming Federal Reserve policy announcements.

Investors should monitor the market closely over the coming hours, especially with key earnings reports pending from major companies like Larsen & Toubro, Maruti Suzuki, and SBI Life Insurance. These results, combined with the expiry-related volatility, are expected to drive market sentiment in the near term.
