IT Earnings Surge Propels Nifty50 Up 2.7% in Weekly Rally

Strong quarterly results in the IT sector drove an 11.7% weekly gain, lifting the Nifty50 and Sensex by over 2.7%. While domestic institutions absorbed Rs 8,990 crore in foreign selling, investors are now monitoring upcoming bank earnings for signs of further market volatility.

The Indian equity market concluded the week ending October 16 with a sharp recovery, primarily led by a resurgence in the information technology sector. The Nifty IT index gained 11.7 percent, marking its strongest weekly performance in nearly two decades. This rally was fundamentally anchored by better-than-expected second-quarter earnings from major tech firms, which provided a positive catalyst for the broader indices after a period of uncertainty.

The benchmark Nifty50 and BSE Sensex rose by 2.7 percent and 3 percent, respectively, over the week. This recovery helped the market absorb sustained selling pressure from foreign institutional investors, who remained net sellers for the eighth consecutive week, offloading equities worth Rs 8,990.50 crore. Providing a critical buffer, domestic institutional investors emerged as the primary buyers, injecting Rs 7,812.81 crore into the market. This ongoing tug-of-war between institutional players highlights that domestic capital is currently a vital stabilizer for the indices.

Broader Market Divergence and Bank Earnings

While the headline indices showed strength, the broader market landscape presented a mixed picture. The Nifty Midcap 100 index managed a modest gain of 0.6 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index finished slightly lower. This divergence suggests that investor participation was concentrated in larger, stable technology companies rather than the high-volatility segments of the market. Notable leadership was seen in firms like Tata Elxsi and KPIT Technologies, while other segments struggled with wider volatility.

Looking ahead, market participants are shifting focus to the upcoming earnings reports from major banking institutions, including HDFC Bank and Axis Bank. These results are expected to be the next major trigger for market direction as the indices approach resistance levels near 23,300 to 23,500. Market stability in the coming week will likely depend on whether the positive earnings momentum can extend to the banking sector or if these reports introduce new volatility.
