Citigroup has introduced a new digital platform, 'eFPI @ Citi,' to reduce Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) registration time from weeks to five business days. This initiative, launched on September 10, 2026, aims to improve the ease of capital inflow into Indian markets by streamlining documentation and digital processes.
Citigroup has officially launched a new digital solution for institutional investors looking to enter the Indian market. The platform, named 'eFPI @ Citi,' is designed to significantly shorten the time required for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) to complete their registration. By moving from a process that previously took several weeks or even months to just five business days, the bank is addressing one of the most common complaints regarding the complexity of investing in India.
The initiative, which went live on September 10, 2026, aligns with the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (SEBI) broader goal of making Indian capital markets more efficient and competitive. By utilizing digital signatures and a common application form, the platform removes much of the manual paperwork that historically slowed down the registration pipeline. This integration is supported by direct API connections with the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), which allows for faster validation of investor data.
Expanding Market Accessibility
The service is being rolled out in phases. As of now, the system is fully operational for regulated public funds coming from the United States, Ireland, and Luxembourg. Citi plans to extend this expedited process to include funds from other major financial hubs, including Singapore, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, in the coming phases. For Indian markets, this represents a structural improvement in how foreign capital is handled, as investors often prioritize jurisdictions where the entry process is seamless and fast.
Citi currently manages approximately one-third of all FPI assets under custody in India. Given this significant market share, the move to digitize and speed up onboarding serves as a strategic effort to retain and grow its custodial business. SEBI leadership has publicly supported the initiative, noting that such technological advancements are essential for maintaining India's appeal to global institutional investors in a competitive cross-border environment.
Monitoring Operational Hurdles and Competition
While the five-day timeline is a notable improvement, investors should keep in mind that the overall process still relies on multiple external stakeholders. The allocation of Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) by the Income Tax Department remains a critical step that exists outside of the bank’s internal system. Any delays at the government or tax authority level could still impact the final registration timeline, regardless of how efficient the custodian's own platform is.
Additionally, the custodial services sector in India is highly competitive. With Citi acting as a first-mover in this specific accelerated format, other Designated Depository Participants (DDPs) are reportedly exploring similar digital frameworks to keep pace. For investors and market observers, the key monitorable will be how quickly other custodians can replicate these efficiencies and whether this shift leads to a broader, industry-wide reduction in onboarding times. The long-term impact on Citi will likely depend on its ability to maintain this competitive advantage as other players upgrade their own technical offerings.
