Sensex Options Emerge as Global Trading Powerhouse
BSE's Sensex options have transformed from a little-used product three years ago into one of the world's most active contracts. This turnaround is credited to better product design, a strategic shift in expiry days, and stronger engagement with traders.
Key Factors Fueling Success
The exchange's success came from identifying and filling key product gaps, like finding the right lot size. A key move was shifting the expiry day from Friday to Thursday. This change met market demand and boosted overall derivatives strategy, diversifying expiry options across exchanges and increasing trading.
Trading Activity Grows Across Investor Types
Growth in Sensex derivatives is broad-based, with individual investors now accounting for about 30% of total volumes. Institutional participation has steadily increased, boosting liquidity. The number of foreign portfolio investors trading these contracts has jumped to over 500, up from around 100 a year ago. High-frequency traders are also showing strong engagement.
New Products on the Horizon
BSE plans to launch three new monthly index derivatives, subject to regulatory approval: BSE Focused IT, Focused MidCap, and Sensex Next 30. The BSE Focused IT index, launched recently, has seen a positive market response, showing BSE's drive to find opportunities in growing economic sectors.
Balancing Growth with Investor Safety
BSE stresses that investor protection and market development go hand-in-hand. As a market operator, the exchange aims to provide efficient trading while supporting responsible and informed investing. The exchange believes long-term market growth relies on investors understanding products well and participating wisely.
Long-Term Growth Strategy
While weekly expiries drive significant activity, BSE is prioritizing new monthly products and deeper liquidity in current monthly contracts for long-term sustainability. Signs of improved liquidity beyond expiry day are already emerging. India's capital markets are still less developed compared to the size of its economy. The exchange sees significant potential for sustainable growth in its derivatives business.
