A study by researchers from the University of Sydney and the University of Glasgow suggests that natural sugars from fruits and honey were essential for human brain development. Challenging the traditional meat-centric view, the findings indicate that glucose needs dictated evolutionary growth as brains expanded from 300 to 1,500 grams.

A new evolutionary study is changing the way researchers view the history of human development, placing a greater emphasis on the role of naturally sweet foods. Research conducted by teams at the University of Sydney and the University of Glasgow suggests that simple sugars found in fruits and honey were likely the primary fuel sources that allowed the human brain to grow significantly over the last four million years.

For decades, the dominant theory regarding human evolution focused heavily on the role of meat consumption and the hunting of animals. This new research, however, argues that the brain’s specific and massive demand for glucose—the form of sugar used by the body for energy—could not have been met by meat alone. As the human brain grew from a small 300-gram organ in early hominins to approximately 1,500 grams in modern humans, the energy required to power such a complex and large structure increased proportionally.

The Glucose Requirement

Scientists involved in the study created models to track the glucose requirements of early humans alongside their brain size. The findings suggest that as the brain expanded, the need for a quick, easily accessible energy source became critical. Natural sugars provided this energy long before humans mastered complex food processing techniques like cooking starchy tubers or grains. This suggests that our physiological reliance on sugar is not just a modern trait but an ancient necessity that supported brain expansion during critical stages of evolution.

Moving Beyond the Meat-Centric Perspective

Lead author Professor Jenny Brand-Miller noted that while protein from meat is often highlighted in evolutionary studies, the brain’s unique requirement for carbohydrates has been an overlooked factor. The study emphasizes that the brain is an energy-intensive organ, and for a significant portion of our evolutionary history, carbohydrates from wild fruits and honey served as the primary, high-energy fuel.

Co-author Professor Karen Hardy added that raw starch is notoriously difficult for humans to digest, implying that early ancestors likely relied on the naturally available sweetness of plants to meet their high metabolic demands. This requirement was especially acute for women of reproductive age, where the glucose demand for fetal development and milk production added another layer of pressure on energy intake.

Implications for Understanding Human Biology

This research combines various data points, including fossil studies, genetics, and metabolic modeling, to provide a more holistic view of how human nutrition evolved. By shifting the focus toward glucose-rich food sources, the findings offer a new explanation for why humans have an innate, often intense, craving for sweet tastes. It suggests this preference may be deeply embedded in our biological history, serving as a survival mechanism that favored individuals who could efficiently source energy for a growing brain.

Moving forward, the scientific community may focus on how these ancient metabolic patterns align with modern dietary health.
