The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is advancing its technical capabilities, with docking technology emerging as a critical requirement for upcoming space projects. M.R. Raghavendra, Director of ISTRAC, confirmed that this technology is essential for two major initiatives: the Chandrayaan-4 lunar sample-return mission and the assembly of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS).
Docking, which involves the precise connection of two spacecraft in orbit, is fundamental for building the space station. The BAS is envisioned as a five-module structure, a project currently in the design phase. ISRO plans to launch the first module by 2028, with the goal of full operational status by 2035. For the Moon mission, docking technology will allow the transfer of lunar samples between spacecraft in orbit before they return to Earth.

Projects of this scale are technically complex, and potential delays in mission schedules or the assembly of the BAS can impact revenue visibility for private sector suppliers.
