India's Gazelle Startup Count Rises to 51 in 2026 Index

The number of Indian startups valued between $500 million and $1 billion has reached 51, with a combined revenue of Rs 33,233 crore. While the sector shows 50% year-on-year revenue growth, analysts highlight a competitive gap in AI-focused business models compared to global peers.

The landscape of high-growth Indian enterprises has expanded, with the 2026 ASK Private Wealth Hurun India Gazelle Index identifying 51 startups valued between $500 million and $1 billion. This growth from 47 entities in the previous year reflects a maturing startup ecosystem, with these firms generating a collective revenue of Rs 33,233 crore, marking a significant 50% year-on-year increase.

Financial services remain the dominant sector within this cohort, accounting for 13 of the 51 companies. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and e-commerce follow, each contributing five companies to the list. The growth is also evident in the workforce, with these 51 entities now employing over 60,000 people. Geographically, Bengaluru continues to lead as the primary hub, housing 17 of these gazelles, while the National Capital Region and Mumbai host 11 and eight, respectively.

A notable highlight of the 2026 data is the transition of several companies to unicorn status. Seven startups from the gazelle pipeline successfully crossed the $1 billion valuation threshold this year, including entities such as Twin Health, KreditBee, Cloudnine Hospitals, Dhan, La Renon, Neo Wealth Management, and InVideo AI. Twin Health notably saw its valuation reach $2 billion, underscoring the capacity for rapid scaling in the healthcare and fintech spaces.

Despite the growth in valuation and revenue, market analysts have pointed to a structural challenge regarding the adoption of artificial intelligence. The index identified only three AI-focused gazelles in India—Ema AI, Observe.AI, and UnifyApps. This is significantly lower than the 54 AI-focused startups identified in the United States and 23 in China. Financial experts suggest that this gap in AI-integrated business models could influence foreign capital inflows, as global investors increasingly prioritize companies with advanced AI capabilities.

Beyond technology and sector concentration, the index also highlights the role of premium education in shaping the founder profile, with IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kanpur emerging as top undergraduate alma maters for the founders of these gazelles. As these companies continue to scale, their ability to integrate emerging technologies and sustain revenue growth will remain key factors for investors monitoring the broader private equity landscape in India.
