PM Surya Ghar Solar Scheme Hits 5 Million Rooftop Milestone

India’s PM Surya Ghar initiative has successfully installed rooftop solar systems on over 5 million homes. The scheme has distributed ₹28,024 crore in subsidies, helping 1.9 million households eliminate their monthly electricity bills while creating a large network of active solar vendors.

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has reported that the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has surpassed 5 million residential rooftop solar installations across India. This milestone comes just over two years after the program’s launch, reflecting a significant acceleration in the country's shift toward decentralized renewable energy. With a total commissioned capacity of 14.8 gigawatts now operational, the initiative is currently adding about 100,000 installations every six days.

Financial Impact on Households and Grid

The scheme’s rapid growth is largely attributed to direct subsidy transfers, with the government disbursing ₹28,024 crore to support individual installations. This financial support has enabled nearly 1.9 million households to achieve zero-cost electricity bills. Beyond direct savings, the program allows households to sell excess power back to the grid. In the last financial year, over 1.2 million households collectively earned ₹421 crore through these net-metering arrangements, providing a supplementary income stream of approximately ₹3,500 per family annually.

Scaling the Solar Ecosystem

To manage this massive rollout, the government has developed an ecosystem comprising 29,469 active solar vendors. The training of more than 232,000 individuals to install and maintain these systems is expected to support long-term operational needs. Financing has also been a focus, with 1.75 million applicants securing concessional loans at an interest rate of 5.75% to cover the upfront costs of the solar setups.

Future Monitorables for the Sector

While the program has demonstrated rapid implementation, its long-term success will depend on grid stability and the continued financial viability of distribution companies (DISCOMs) that purchase the surplus power. Investors tracking the renewable energy sector should monitor the ongoing solarization of government buildings, where over 106,000 structures have already been equipped with panels. Additionally, the planned expansion of the Utility Led Aggregation model into 12 more states, aimed at reaching lower-income households, remains a key indicator of the scheme's ability to maintain its current momentum. Future updates on maintenance quality and the actual lifespan of these installations will be critical to assessing the sustained economic benefit of the initiative.
