Midwest Energy Opens 1.2 GWh Bengaluru Battery Plant

Midwest Energy has started commercial production at its 1.2 GWh battery storage facility in Bengaluru to support grid stability. The plant produces battery modules and containerized systems for industrial and utility use. The company is also expanding its rare earth magnet manufacturing capacity in Hyderabad to 5,000 tonnes per year.

Midwest Energy, the clean energy arm of the Hyderabad-based Midwest Business House, has launched commercial operations at its new 1.2 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing unit in Bengaluru. This facility is part of a broader effort to strengthen India's battery storage infrastructure, which is essential for managing the intermittent nature of power from solar and wind sources.

The Bengaluru plant is built as an integrated facility capable of producing battery modules, racks, and containerized systems. With a versatile output range from 3 kWh to 6 MWh, the company plans to supply these systems to commercial, industrial, and utility-scale customers both in India and overseas. By providing energy storage, these systems help smooth out the mismatch between energy production and consumer demand, a common challenge in power grids with high renewable energy penetration.

Expanding Rare Earth Magnet Capacity

Alongside its new battery operations, Midwest Energy is building a supply chain for rare earth permanent magnets, which are critical components in electric vehicles and wind turbines. The company currently operates a magnet manufacturing unit with a capacity of 500 tonnes per annum. It has announced plans to increase this capacity to 5,000 tonnes per annum at its facility in Hyderabad, Telangana. This expansion aims to reduce dependence on imported components for the green energy sector.

The energy storage and magnet manufacturing sectors in India are currently seeing significant investment as the country moves toward its renewable energy targets. For investors, the long-term success of these projects will depend on the company's ability to maintain competitive pricing, secure raw materials for magnet production, and manage the high capital expenditure required for such large-scale facilities. Monitoring the order book for the new Bengaluru plant and the timeline for the magnet plant expansion will be essential to track the company's operational growth.
