Renewable energy developer Evren has signed a 750 MW power purchase agreement with NTPC for projects in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. The deal involves a mix of solar, wind, and battery storage, supporting the company's objective to expand its operational footprint in the Indian energy market.
Evren, a renewable energy platform backed by global asset manager Brookfield, announced on Monday that it has finalized a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the national utility giant NTPC. The agreement involves a total capacity of 750 MW, which will be sourced from a combination of solar, wind, and battery energy storage projects. The company plans to develop these assets across Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Strategic Growth and Portfolio Scale
This PPA is a notable addition to Evren’s portfolio as the company continues to scale its operations in the competitive Indian renewable energy landscape. According to the company, these projects are expected to generate approximately 2.5 billion units of electricity annually once fully operational. Evren has stated that the initiative will also support decarbonization efforts by aiming to offset about 1.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
Suman Kumar, CEO of Evren, noted that the deal reflects the company's execution capacity. Evren currently reports an 11 GW pipeline, with over 3.5 GW of capacity currently under construction. For investors, the ability to successfully commission these large-scale projects on time and within budget remains a primary area to track. Projects involving hybrid components like battery storage often require complex engineering and higher initial capital spending compared to standalone solar or wind farms.
Sector Context and Execution Risks
India’s renewable sector has seen increased interest from global investors, leading to intense competition for large-scale utility tenders. While securing a PPA with a strong counterparty like NTPC reduces credit risk for the developer, the sector faces common challenges including fluctuations in raw material prices for modules and turbines, as well as potential delays in land acquisition and grid connectivity.
Like other major players in the space, Evren's financial performance will likely be tied to its ability to maintain efficient profit margins while managing the debt necessary to fund its 11 GW project pipeline. The company is part of a larger trend of renewable platforms attempting to capture market share by offering round-the-clock or firm power through hybrid solutions. Moving forward, stakeholders may look for updates regarding the project commissioning timeline, the cost of funding for these specific assets, and the overall pace at which the company converts its multi-gigawatt pipeline into revenue-generating operational capacity.
