European alternative asset manager EQT has called off the planned sale of its Indian renewable energy developer, Zelestra India. Previously, EQT had engaged JP Morgan to explore a sale process for Zelestra India, with an estimated enterprise value between $184 million and $421 million. Notably, global investment firm Blackstone was reportedly considering an acquisition.
Instead of selling, EQT will now integrate Zelestra India into its Asia Pacific infrastructure team. The firm plans a substantial investment of approximately $600 million to expand Zelestra India's portfolio. To lead this new phase of growth, EQT has appointed Parag Sharma, the founder and former CEO of O2 Power, a company that EQT had successfully developed and later sold to JSW Neo Energy. Sharma replaces the incumbent CEO, Sajay K.V.
Zelestra India currently operates 600 megawatts (MW) of capacity and has an additional 2 gigawatts (GW) of contracted projects, with 1.5GW under construction. The company aims to reach 8.6GW of capacity by 2031.
Impact: This decision signifies a strong commitment by EQT to the Indian renewable energy market. The significant investment and strategic focus on building Zelestra India, mirroring the success of O2 Power, could lead to substantial growth in India's green energy sector. It may also spur further investment and consolidation within the renewable energy space in India, potentially impacting related companies and investor sentiment towards the sector.
