The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has introduced the Master Plan for Delhi 2047 (MPD-2047), laying out a long-term roadmap for the city's urban development. A major focus of this draft plan is increasing renewable energy adoption through non-traditional infrastructure. The authority suggests harnessing solar power by installing panels over existing canal networks and drains, subject to site feasibility studies.
The plan outlines clear mandates for the future of the city's energy needs. Government buildings and institutional campuses with rooftop areas larger than 500 square meters will be required to install solar panels, in line with established Delhi Solar Policy norms. Additionally, the plan encourages the development of agriculture-cum-solar farms on greenfield sites and requires major public transport hubs, such as bus depots and metro stations, to transition toward renewable power sources. To support this, the plan also suggests moving toward an underground transmission network, particularly in new land pooling areas, to modernize the city’s power grid.
