The Delhi Cabinet has approved a new solar energy policy providing free 3 kW rooftop installations for households consuming under 400 units monthly. By combining state and central subsidies to cover total costs, the government targets 2.30 lakh installations by March 2027. This initiative is expected to boost demand for solar equipment and installation services in the region.

The Delhi government has finalized a significant revision to its solar energy policy, aiming to lower energy costs for residential consumers while expanding renewable power usage. Under the newly approved plan, households that consume less than 400 units of electricity per month will be eligible for free 3 kW rooftop solar panel installations. The government has set an ambitious goal to complete these installations for 2.30 lakh households by March 2027.

Financial support for this initiative involves a change in the subsidy model. Previously, residents had to rely on generation-based incentives, where benefits were provided slowly based on the power produced over five years. The new policy shifts to an upfront subsidy approach. The Delhi administration will provide a capital subsidy of ₹78,000, which will be added to an equivalent subsidy from the Central Government. This combined funding is intended to cover the full installation cost, removing the primary financial barrier for households.

Beyond installation, the government has committed to bearing the ongoing maintenance expenses for these systems. This is intended to ensure that the solar units remain functional and provide reliable energy over the long term. By targeting the 400-unit usage bracket, the policy is designed to reduce electricity bills for middle-to-lower-income families and manage power demand during peak usage hours.

While the scheme aims to accelerate solar adoption, it faces several implementation challenges. Meeting the target of 2.30 lakh installations within the March 2027 deadline requires coordinated efforts between the government, utility providers, and private installation contractors. There are also technical constraints, as the feasibility of solar installations depends on individual rooftop space, structural strength, and adequate sunlight, which may prevent universal coverage across all targeted households.

The large-scale rollout also places a notable burden on the state’s budget, as the government is covering both the initial capital costs and future maintenance. For the renewable energy sector, however, the policy creates a predictable, government-backed demand for solar equipment, including panels, inverters, and mounting systems. Investors in the energy sector may monitor whether domestic solar manufacturers and engineering, procurement, and construction companies can scale their supply chains and workforce sufficiently to meet this demand without compromising project margins or timelines.
