RBI Mandates Interoperability for NBFC Account Aggregators

The Reserve Bank of India has introduced interoperability for NBFC Account Aggregators, enabling seamless financial data sharing across platforms. The new policy, effective by December 31, 2026, aims to simplify data access for customers, with listed infrastructure players like CAMS seeing immediate positive market movement.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced a major regulatory update on October 7, 2026, mandating interoperability among Non-Banking Financial Company Account Aggregators (NBFC-AAs). This directive is a significant step in the central bank's effort to create a more integrated financial ecosystem, allowing customers to use any licensed aggregator platform to share their financial data with various providers, regardless of where the data originates. This shift mirrors the interoperable nature of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), aiming to break down data silos that previously restricted users to specific aggregator apps.

Alongside this framework, the regulator is expanding the utility of Consolidated Account Statements (CAS). SEBI-regulated depositories will now include bank deposit data within these statements, providing retail investors with a more unified view of their financial holdings, including investments and cash savings. For those without demat accounts, the account aggregator ecosystem remains the primary channel for accessing such consolidated reporting. The full implementation of these interoperability requirements is mandated by December 31, 2026.

Financial infrastructure companies that support this digital backend are expected to benefit from the broader adoption of these services. Following the announcement, market participants showed interest in the sector, with CAMS recording positive stock movement of approximately 1.5%. Other financial infrastructure entities, such as Pine Labs, also saw positive market sentiment with a gain of around 3.4% in the immediate aftermath of the news.

While this initiative aims to enhance customer convenience, it also brings a new focus on the technical and security readiness of the ecosystem. As the account aggregator network scales and becomes more connected, the RBI is placing greater emphasis on robust data privacy and cybersecurity standards. Market participants will need to prioritize these technical upgrades to ensure full compliance and system security by the year-end deadline.

Investors and stakeholders should monitor the pace of integration by various financial institutions, as the successful rollout depends on the technical readiness of both the aggregators and the financial information providers. The long-term impact on the margins and operational efficiency of infrastructure providers will be a key factor to watch as the system moves toward full interoperability.
