RBI Keeps Repo Rate at 5.25% in August Policy Review

The Reserve Bank of India has maintained the repo rate at 5.25% during its August 2026 monetary policy meeting. The central bank retained its 'neutral' stance, signaling a data-dependent approach as it balances strong growth projections with ongoing global economic risks. This stability provides clarity for the market as the bank monitors potential impacts from inflation and geopolitical factors.

On August 5, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced its decision to keep the repo rate steady at 5.25%. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted unanimously to maintain this level and continue with a neutral policy stance. This decision reflects the central bank’s preference for flexibility, allowing it to respond to incoming economic data rather than committing to a fixed path of rate changes. By keeping rates unchanged, the RBI is aiming to support continued economic stability.

The central bank updated its economic projections, showing a positive outlook for the domestic economy. The growth forecast for the 2027 financial year was revised upward to 6.7%, improving from the previous estimate of 6.6%. Simultaneously, the inflation forecast for the year was revised down to 5.0% from 5.1%. These adjustments highlight the RBI's view that while the Indian economy remains resilient, it must still be managed carefully against fluctuating global conditions.

Despite the stable policy, the central bank has highlighted several risks that it is tracking. Global instability, particularly the ongoing conflict in West Asia, has the potential to disrupt supply chains and push up energy costs. Additionally, the RBI noted that volatile crude oil prices, trade uncertainties, and climatic risks such as El Niño could impact agricultural production and food inflation. Because these factors can change quickly, the RBI governor emphasized that the committee will prioritize a data-dependent approach for all future policy decisions.

For investors and businesses, the decision to hold rates provides a predictable interest rate environment for the near term. Stable rates generally help companies manage their borrowing costs and plan capital projects with more certainty. However, the market will remain attentive to how these global risks evolve. The central bank’s commentary suggests it is not in a rush to adjust policy but is keeping a close watch on inflation and supply-side pressures. Market participants will look toward the next policy meeting, scheduled for October 5-7, 2026, for further clarity on the evolving economic outlook.
