Indiabulls Limited Gets RBI CIC Registration, Eyes Internal Review

Indiabulls Limited has received a Certificate of Registration from the Reserve Bank of India to operate as a Core Investment Company. While this aligns the firm with specific rules for investment-holding companies, management is currently reviewing whether to retain this status or surrender the license. The update does not represent a shift into new retail lending operations.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a Certificate of Registration to Indiabulls Limited, officially designating the firm as a Core Investment Company (CIC). This status places the entity under a specific regulatory framework designed for companies that function primarily as investment-holding structures for their own corporate groups.

In simple terms, a CIC is not a retail bank or a standard lender. Its primary role is to manage capital and provide funding to companies within its own business group. Under strict RBI guidelines, a firm with this status must maintain at least 90 percent of its net assets in investments or loans directed toward its group subsidiaries. Furthermore, at least 60 percent of these net assets must be in the form of equity shares in those group companies.

What This Means for the Business

This registration represents a formal alignment with the central bank’s regulatory framework, but it does not indicate any expansion into new lending, retail banking, or broader market activities. The company, formerly known as Yaari Digital Integrated Services Limited, has clarified that this development is a structural change.

Why the Status is Under Review

While the firm has obtained the certificate, it has not committed to maintaining this status indefinitely. In a regulatory filing dated October 2, 2026, the company stated that it is currently conducting an internal evaluation to determine if the CIC framework is the most suitable fit for its long-term business model.

Management retains the option to surrender the certificate if internal assessments conclude that the regulatory constraints of the CIC status do not align with the company's operations. Because of this, the main monitorable for investors is any future announcement from the company regarding whether it chooses to operate under this registration or proceed with an alternative structure. There has been no guidance on potential fiscal changes resulting from this status, and the immediate impact remains administrative rather than operational.
