The South Coast Railway Zone has successfully replaced 500 corroded hanger cables on the Godavari Bow String Arch Railway Bridge. This essential maintenance project aims to extend the lifespan of the 30-year-old bridge while ensuring uninterrupted train traffic on the busy Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam route.

What Happened

The South Coast Railway Zone has completed a critical rehabilitation project on the Godavari Bow String Arch Railway Bridge, a vital link on the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam line. Engineers replaced 500 of the bridge's 672 hanger cables, which had shown signs of corrosion. The work was carried out without stopping train operations, ensuring that both passenger and freight services continued smoothly during the process.

Modernizing Aging Infrastructure

Built roughly 30 years ago, the bridge required significant intervention to maintain safety standards. The replacement cables utilize modern corrosion-resistant systems, including high-strength PSC strands protected by a specialized four-layer European coating. This technical upgrade was supported by international expertise from Italy and structural analysis from IIT-Mumbai to ensure the bridge meets current safety requirements and remains durable for years to come.

New Bridge Health Monitoring System

Beyond the cable replacement, the railway authority has installed a Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) to shift from reactive to proactive maintenance. Developed in collaboration with Australian instrumentation experts, this system uses 272 smart sensors embedded across the 2.8-kilometer structure. These sensors track vital data such as arch movement, hanger tension, and deck performance in real-time. This digital oversight is designed to provide early warnings regarding structural fatigue, potentially reducing future emergency repair costs.

Importance for Rail Connectivity

The Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam section is one of the busiest corridors in the South Coast Railway network, serving as a primary artery for logistics and passenger movement in Andhra Pradesh. By completing this project without service interruptions, the railway has minimized the economic impact on cargo movement and passenger travel. The use of an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for this work reflects a standard approach in large infrastructure maintenance to fix accountability and timelines on private contractors.
