Rail Vikas Nigam Limited expects the first Vande Bharat sleeper prototype to roll out from its Latur facility by March 31, 2027. The project update comes as the company manages steady profit growth alongside margin pressures and recent regulatory compliance issues.
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has confirmed a new timeline for the rollout of the first Vande Bharat sleeper train prototype. The company now expects the inaugural trainset to be completed at the Latur manufacturing facility by March 31, 2027. This project is being handled by Kinet Railway Solutions, a joint venture between RVNL and the Russian rail manufacturer Transmashholding, which was awarded the contract to produce 120 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets.
For investors, this timeline update provides clarity on the execution of a key infrastructure project. The contract, valued at approximately Rs 14,400 crore, represents a significant portion of the company’s future order book. Successful delivery of this prototype is considered essential to meeting the production goals of the larger contract.
Financial Performance and Stock Movement
The update on the sleeper project follows the company's financial results for the quarter ending June 2026. RVNL reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 159.36 crore, reflecting an 18.5% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite the growth in profit, the company’s stock has faced significant volatility. As of August 26, 2026, the share price was trading around Rs 221, which is notably lower than its 52-week high of Rs 400.70 and closer to its 52-week low of Rs 217.02.
Regulatory and Operational Risks
While the company continues to execute complex infrastructure projects across 16 states, investors are tracking several operational risks. One area of concern is margin pressure. The company has seen its operating margins tighten due to competitive bidding for large infrastructure projects and higher contract provisions.
Additionally, the company recently faced regulatory scrutiny. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) imposed a fine of Rs 9.66 lakh on RVNL regarding non-compliance with board composition regulations for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. While the financial impact of the fine is minor, it highlights a need for improved governance practices. Other risks that shareholders often track include high debtor days—the time it takes for the company to collect payments after finishing work—and the potential for execution delays in long-gestation projects.
Looking ahead, market participants will monitor whether the Latur facility can maintain the production schedule for the Vande Bharat sleeper project without further delays or cost increases. The ability of the company to manage its working capital and improve profit margins while executing its large order book will remain the key monitorable for the coming quarters.
