RVNL Hits Tunnel Milestone in Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has finished a 10-kilometer escape tunnel at Dhalwala, marking the 22nd successful breakthrough for the 125-kilometer Rishikesh-Karnaprayag line. As the project reaches 78% completion towards a 2029 target, investors are weighing this progress against recent stock underperformance and pressure on the company's profit margins and working capital cycle.

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has achieved a significant engineering milestone in the 125-kilometer Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail corridor. The company successfully completed a 10-kilometer escape tunnel at Dhalwala, which is the 22nd tunnel to be breached out of the 28 planned for the entire route. This rail project is a major infrastructure initiative designed to improve connectivity across the difficult Himalayan terrain of Uttarakhand.

Project Execution and Progress

The project is now estimated to be 78% complete, with an official target for finalization by December 2029. Constructing this line involves navigating challenging geological conditions that require advanced tunneling techniques, including the use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM). Besides the tunneling work, the project includes the construction of 19 major bridges. Given the high-altitude environment and unpredictable soil and rock structures in the region, consistent progress on tunneling is critical to preventing cost overruns and meeting the revised project deadlines. The company currently has a large workforce deployed to maintain this pace.

Financial Context and Stock Performance

While the project remains a strategic asset for the company, investors have recently observed pressure on the stock. As of September 11, 2026, the company’s share price closed at ₹204.90, which is significantly lower than its 52-week high of ₹400.70. Over the past year, the stock has seen a return of approximately -38.65%, reflecting a period of correction.

From a financial perspective, the company has faced challenges related to profit margins, which have come under pressure recently. Additionally, the company has experienced an elongation in its working capital cycle, evidenced by an increase in debtor days. For infrastructure companies, longer debtor days often mean that cash remains tied up in projects for extended periods, which can affect overall liquidity. Investors often monitor these metrics closely to determine how effectively the company can manage its cash flow while juggling multiple, large-scale capital-intensive projects.

Risk Factors and Monitorables

Infrastructure development in mountainous regions carries inherent risks. Geological uncertainties remain the primary challenge for the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project, as unforeseen soil conditions can delay construction and increase costs. Furthermore, as an engineering and construction entity, RVNL is exposed to execution risks common to large government projects, such as potential traffic diversion issues and the challenge of maintaining profitability amid rigid long-term contract pricing.

The next major milestone for stakeholders to track will be the remaining six tunnel breakthroughs and the final commissioning schedule. Future updates on project costs and any revisions to the 2029 completion timeline will provide a clearer picture of the company's long-term financial health and operational efficiency.
