Indian Railways Deploys AI to Boost Freight Efficiency

Indian Railways is integrating artificial intelligence to monitor wagon health and improve freight reliability. The digital shift aims to help the state-run transporter reclaim cargo market share from road freight. However, success depends on upgrading aging infrastructure and managing thin operational margins.

Indian Railways is transitioning its freight maintenance from a reactive, manual model to a digital, data-driven system. The organization has begun deploying advanced Machine Vision Inspection Systems (MVIS) and other AI-based technologies to monitor the health of freight wagons in real-time. By using line-scan and area-scan cameras, the system can detect defects like loose or missing components on trains while they are still in motion, significantly reducing the need for manual stops and inspections.

Tech-Driven Maintenance

Central to this modernization is Project DRISHTI, developed in collaboration with IIT Guwahati, which accelerates wagon inspections and enhances consignment security. Beyond MVIS, the network has implemented 24 Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD) and 25 Online Monitoring of Rolling Stock (OMRS) systems. These tools gather data on thermal patterns and mechanical wear, allowing maintenance teams to address issues before they cause breakdowns or delays. This shift to predictive maintenance is designed to minimize downtime and enhance the safety of freight movement across the network.

Strategic Goals and Freight Share

This technology rollout is a key component of the Railways' strategy to increase its modal share of freight transport to 40% over the next 5 to 10 years. Currently, road transport handles a large portion of domestic cargo. By offering a more reliable, technologically monitored, and timely service, the Railways aims to compete more effectively with road logistics. The introduction of a dedicated 'Madad' grievance portal is also part of this commercial push, providing customers with a clearer channel to report and resolve loading or unloading issues.

Financial and Operational Challenges

While the technological upgrades are significant, the initiative faces inherent operational and financial hurdles. Indian Railways operates with thin operating margins, and the organization continues to manage high debt levels, with the Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) serving as its primary financing arm. Integrating sophisticated AI and machine learning protocols with legacy infrastructure remains a complex task that could see cost overruns or implementation delays.

Furthermore, the increased reliance on digital systems creates new vulnerabilities, including potential cybersecurity risks that the organization must mitigate to ensure operational stability. The ultimate effectiveness of these AI deployments will depend on how quickly these tools can be standardized across various zones, which currently operate under different protocols and jurisdictional constraints. Investors and analysts will be monitoring whether this capital spending on modernization translates into improved asset utilization and whether it helps stabilize margins by reducing long-term repair costs.
