Indian Railways has launched a new technology-driven initiative to improve the quality and cleanliness of passenger linens. The department is currently piloting AI-powered camera systems designed to detect stains and verify the hygiene standards of washed items before they are loaded onto trains. This automated monitoring is intended to reduce human error and ensure that bedding kits meet strict cleanliness protocols.
The pilot program is operational in the Pune division of Central Railway, as well as the Jaipur and Jodhpur divisions of North Western Railway. Beyond AI-based visual inspection, the railways are using devices known as Whito-meters to scientifically measure the effectiveness of washing processes. Additionally, CCTV cameras have been installed within laundry facilities to monitor operational workflows and ensure that cleaning procedures are followed consistently.
This shift toward automated quality control follows passenger feedback and concerns regarding the frequency of washing for woollen blankets and other bedroll components. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained that the standard AC class bedroll kit consists of two bedsheets, a pillow cover, and a hand towel. To maintain hygiene, the department requires that the sheet used to cover the blanket be washed after every single trip.
As part of the effort to improve the overall travel experience, the North Western Railway has extended the provision of blanket cover sheets to all AC class passengers. The same standard has also been adopted for the newer Vande Bharat Sleeper trains.
