Indian Railways has sanctioned ₹170 crore to deploy the Kavach 4.0 train safety system across the Moradabad Division. This project covers 712 route kilometers and is part of a massive national plan to install collision-prevention technology. The ongoing safety rollout, backed by a large annual budget, signals consistent demand for railway signaling and telecom equipment manufacturers.

The Ministry of Railways has approved an allocation of ₹170 crore to install the Kavach 4.0 automatic train protection system in the Moradabad Division of Northern Railway. The project covers a span of 712 route kilometers and aims to enhance safety on high-traffic rail routes by reducing human error and preventing potential collisions.

Scaling the Safety Network

Kavach 4.0 is an indigenous technology designed to stop trains automatically if a signal is passed at danger (SPAD) or if another train is detected on the same track. This deployment in the Moradabad Division is part of a nationwide effort to secure thousands of kilometers of track. By July 31, 2026, the system was already operational across 2,633 route kilometers, notably on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors.

Impact on Railway Infrastructure Spending

This allocation is a small but significant piece of a much larger capital expenditure cycle. For the 2026-27 fiscal year, Indian Railways has been granted a budget of ₹2,93,030 crore. As of July 2026, the department had already spent ₹1,14,973 crore, highlighting a steady pace of investment. This aggressive spending is driving demand for specific sectors, including signaling manufacturers, optical fiber cable providers, and telecom tower companies that support the Kavach infrastructure.

Execution and Logistical Challenges

While the funding provides the necessary capital, the actual rollout faces complex logistical hurdles. Installing trackside infrastructure, including telecom towers and optical fiber cables, is a major undertaking that requires careful planning across 21,794 route kilometers currently in progress. Furthermore, the technical requirement to retrofit over 6,200 existing locomotives with the Kavach system involves significant operational coordination. These implementation requirements create a long-term pipeline of work for specialized railway equipment suppliers.

Risks and Future Monitorables

For investors observing the railway sector, the primary risks associated with this modernization drive include execution delays and potential cost increases during large-scale retrofitting. The complexity of integrating new safety technology into an aging network means that projects can sometimes take longer than planned. Future updates on the pace of locomotive retrofitting and the commissioning of new trackside equipment will be important indicators of how efficiently the capital is being deployed to meet these safety targets.
