IRCTC has started a phased rollout of a new reservation system aiming to boost capacity to over 150,000 tickets per minute. While the upgrade focuses on reducing peak-time site failures, investors are keeping an eye on recent regulatory fines and ongoing pressure on profit margins.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has officially commenced the rollout of its upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS), a major technological overhaul designed to significantly increase its online booking capacity. The new infrastructure aims to scale the system to handle over 150,000 tickets per minute, a substantial jump from the previous capacity of approximately 32,000. This phased migration, which began in August 2026, is intended to curb service disruptions and system crashes that often occur during high-traffic periods, such as the daily opening of Tatkal bookings.
The project involves a shift toward a cloud-enabled framework, including the establishment of an active-active disaster recovery site in Secunderabad. This configuration is built to ensure that if the primary server faces technical issues, the secondary system can take over immediately, preventing booking failures. Alongside these backend upgrades, the company is refining its user interface to reduce load times, including simplifying the booking process by removing redundant steps like excessive CAPTCHA challenges.
From a financial perspective, this capital-intensive upgrade occurs while the company manages certain earnings headwinds. In the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, IRCTC posted a net profit of Rs 330.16 crore, marking a slight decline compared to the previous year. Although the company remains in a strong position—remaining debt-free with cash reserves of Rs 3,112 crore as of June 30, 2026—it has been dealing with margin pressure. This is partly due to rising operational costs and changes in the revenue mix, particularly within its catering segment.
On the regulatory front, the company has faced recent challenges. On August 26, 2026, IRCTC received fines of Rs 10.23 lakh each from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). These penalties were issued due to non-compliance with SEBI regulations regarding board composition. The company has clarified that it is working with the Ministry of Railways to address these governance concerns.
Moving forward, the primary monitorable for investors will be whether this new digital backbone improves system reliability as planned without leading to further cost escalations. Stakeholders will also likely track future financial results to see if the new platform helps stabilize operational margins and how the company resolves its current regulatory compliance matters.
