Centre Clears 4th Rail Line For Strategic Chicken’s Neck Corridor

The government has approved a fourth railway line for the vital 'Chicken's Neck' corridor, a key link to India's Northeast. This infrastructure project includes a 29-km underground double-line section, aimed at improving security and logistical capacity in the sensitive Siliguri region.

The central government has officially approved the construction of a fourth railway line through the strategically critical 'Chicken's Neck' corridor, often known as the Siliguri Corridor. This decision, announced on August 13, 2026, by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), is a major infrastructure step designed to bolster connectivity between mainland India and the northeastern states.

The Siliguri Corridor is a narrow landmass spanning approximately 20-22 kilometers in northern West Bengal. It acts as the primary terrestrial artery for civilian, commercial, and military movement into the Northeast. Given its proximity to borders with Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, as well as the proximity to the Chumbi Valley, this region is a high-priority area for national security and logistics. Strengthening rail infrastructure here is seen as a way to ensure reliable movement of goods and passengers despite potential disruptions.

Underground Infrastructure Push

A significant part of this new initiative is a nearly 29-kilometer double-line underground railway project connecting Tinmai Ghat and Bagdogra. Constructing an underground rail network in this terrain is a complex engineering task. It highlights the government's focus on creating resilient and secure infrastructure that can bypass traditional surface-level constraints. This initiative follows the earlier proposal for a third line, which has now been expanded to a fourth, reflecting the growing demand for higher rail capacity in the region.

Impact on Regional Logistics

For investors and market observers, this project represents a long-term commitment to infrastructure spending in the railway sector. By expanding capacity in this bottleneck region, the government aims to reduce transit delays for freight and passenger traffic. The Northeast region has been a key area of focus for development, with ongoing efforts such as the redevelopment of the New Jalpaiguri station—slated for completion by April 2027—and the complete electrification of the NFR network.

While the project promises to improve logistics and connectivity, it also brings specific execution challenges. The geography of the Siliguri corridor, combined with the technical complexity of building an underground tunnel system, makes the project sensitive to potential cost overruns and construction delays. Furthermore, the strategic dependence on this single corridor remains a structural risk for the region, which this infrastructure expansion intends to mitigate.

Investors may monitor the progress of tendering, project timelines, and the execution of the underground segment, as these will provide insights into the pace of infrastructure rollout in the region. The project is part of a broader, multi-year plan by the Ministry of Railways to enhance network capacity across the NFR division, which continues to be a crucial driver for regional economic growth.
