Scaling Wealth: Why Hitting Rs 10 Crore is Harder Than You Think

Many investors struggle to grow a Rs 2 crore portfolio to Rs 10 crore because they stick to the same strategy for too long. Financial advisor Kapil Jain highlights that as wealth grows, investors must shift from aggressive accumulation to protecting their capital. Failing to adjust your investment approach to handle market swings is why most miss the mark.

Growing an investment portfolio from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore within a decade is a major financial challenge. According to financial advisor Kapil Jain, very few investors reach this goal. The problem is often not the amount of money saved, but the strategy used. Many investors make the mistake of using the same "buy and hold" approach throughout their entire wealth-building journey, even as the size of their portfolio changes drastically.

The Three Phases of Wealth

The journey to a large corpus usually happens in stages. The first phase, aimed at building the initial Rs 2 crore, often takes five to six years. During these early years, disciplined monthly investing through SIPs is an effective way to handle market ups and downs. However, once a portfolio crosses that Rs 2 crore mark, the dynamics change. The focus must shift from simply adding more money to carefully protecting what has already been built.

Why Bigger Portfolios Need Different Care

One of the biggest risks for larger portfolios is how market crashes impact the total value in real terms. When a portfolio is small, a 25% market dip might feel manageable. But when that same percentage drop hits a portfolio of Rs 5 crore or Rs 10 crore, the absolute loss in money terms becomes significant. Losing 25% of a Rs 5 crore portfolio means an erosion of Rs 1.25 crore. This kind of loss can wipe out several years of hard-won growth and savings, making it difficult to recover quickly.

Shifting to Wealth Preservation

Many investors fail because they do not change their strategy as their wealth grows. When managing smaller amounts, it is common to stay fully invested in high-growth assets. However, as the portfolio size grows, it becomes necessary to introduce more stability. This means moving away from a single-track mindset and focusing on wealth preservation.

This involves regular portfolio reviews and rebalancing. Rebalancing is the simple act of checking your investments to ensure they still match your risk level. If one part of your portfolio, like stocks, has grown too large, you may need to move some money into safer options like bonds or other stable assets. This protects your capital against sharp market falls.

What Investors Should Monitor

If your goal is to scale your wealth over a decade, the most important task is to periodically review your asset allocation. You must decide if your current mix of stocks, gold, and debt still makes sense for a larger portfolio. The primary risk to avoid is ignoring market volatility. Instead of only looking at returns, successful long-term wealth management requires you to prioritize keeping the money you have already made. Investors who can successfully adjust their strategy as they reach higher wealth milestones are better prepared to protect their capital during market downturns.
