Festive Inflation: Travel Costs, 7.47% Bond Yields Hit Budgets

Indian consumers face a festive squeeze as airfares climb up to 40% and bond yields reach 7.47%. Investors should monitor portfolio risks and hidden loan costs this season.

The festive season is bringing a mix of high costs and financial challenges for Indian consumers. Air travel, a major part of winter holiday planning, is currently seeing prices 30% to 40% higher than last year. Rising fuel costs and restricted airline capacity are the primary reasons for this increase. For many families, this means a trip that was affordable last year now requires a much larger budget. To manage these costs, travelers are increasingly looking at rail travel or changing their plans to avoid peak price dates.

On the investment front, the fixed-income sector is seeing significant movement. India’s 10-year government bond yield touched 7.47% on October 23, 2026, which is a notable rise from the 6.54% seen a year ago. For investors, this creates a specific risk. When bond yields rise, bond prices typically fall. This affects the value of gilt funds, particularly those that hold long-duration government securities. Investors holding these funds may see changes in their portfolio value, leading some fund managers to take a more cautious approach until there is more clarity on inflation trends.

Banks are also very active during this season, pushing festive loan offers with lower interest rates and fee waivers. While these offers might look attractive, borrowers need to be careful. A lower headline interest rate does not always mean a cheaper loan. It is important for borrowers to check the Annual Percentage Rate (APR). The APR provides a clearer picture of the total cost of borrowing, including hidden fees and charges, which are often not highlighted in marketing materials.

Household spending is also seeing pressure from the rising costs of weddings, which have become more expensive due to the demand for luxury and technology-heavy events. Many families are now turning to smarter planning, such as handling decor and event logistics themselves, to keep costs under control and avoid taking on unnecessary debt. As the season progresses, focusing on these financial details and understanding the true cost of spending and borrowing will be crucial for managing personal finances effectively.
