Urban Company Q2 Loss Widens; Plans Rs 2,500 Crore QIP

Urban Company reported a net loss of Rs 182.5 crore for Q2 FY27 as expenses surged 61% due to heavy spending on its InstaHelp quick-service division. While revenue grew 41% to Rs 537.3 crore, the company plans to raise Rs 2,500 crore via a qualified institutional placement to fund expansion. Investors will likely focus on the company's cash burn and the timeline for achieving sustainable profitability.

Urban Company has reported a widening net loss of Rs 182.5 crore for the second quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, compared to a loss of Rs 59.3 crore in the same period last year. The primary driver behind this increase in losses is the company's aggressive capital spending on its InstaHelp quick-service division, as it looks to capture market share in a competitive home services industry.

Revenue Growth and Cost Analysis

Despite the jump in losses, the company recorded a strong 41 percent year-on-year growth in revenue from operations, reaching Rs 537.3 crore. This revenue growth was driven by consistent performance across domestic and international markets, as well as the smart home products segment. However, total expenses for the quarter rose significantly by 61 percent to Rs 745.7 crore, reflecting the high cost of supporting the new expansion strategy.

To understand the company's core operational health, it is useful to look at the adjusted EBITDA performance. The company reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of Rs 144 crore. Notably, when the Rs 174 crore investment in the InstaHelp vertical is excluded from the calculation, the adjusted EBITDA improves to a positive Rs 30 crore. This suggests that the existing core business is generating cash, while the new division is currently a significant drain on overall profitability.

Capital Raising and Future Targets

To strengthen its financial position and support further expansion, Urban Company has announced plans to raise up to Rs 2,500 crore through a qualified institutional placement. This capital infusion is intended to provide the company with the flexibility to continue investing in its leadership position and explore other growth opportunities.

Management has maintained its guidance for reaching adjusted EBITDA breakeven by the third quarter of the 2028 fiscal year. Looking further ahead, the company has set a long-term goal of achieving an adjusted EBITDA of Rs 1,000 crore by the 2031 fiscal year.

For investors and stakeholders, the key monitorables moving forward will include the successful execution of the InstaHelp division, the company’s ability to manage its cash burn rate, and the timeline for achieving its stated profitability targets. The progress of the planned capital raise will also be important, as it will determine the company’s ability to fund its expansion plans without compromising its balance sheet stability.
