The Union Cabinet has sanctioned a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus worth ₹2,009.61 crore for over 11 lakh non-gazetted railway employees. This festive incentive rewards staff for strong operational performance, including moving 1,670 million tonnes of freight during the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The Union Cabinet has officially approved a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) for railway employees for the 2025-26 fiscal year. This decision provides a financial incentive to approximately 11.41 lakh non-gazetted staff ahead of the festive season, including Durga Puja and Dussehra. The government has earmarked a total of ₹2,009.61 crore for this payout.
Operational Milestones and Payout Details
The bonus is awarded based on the railway network’s operational achievements over the past year. During the 2025-26 period, the Indian Railways recorded a freight loading of 1,670 million tonnes and facilitated travel for 7.41 billion passengers. These performance figures serve as the benchmark for the productivity-linked calculation. Eligible staff, including track maintainers, locomotive pilots, train managers, station masters, and various technical supervisors, will receive a maximum payout of ₹17,951 per person.
Context on Wage Ceiling and Labor Relations
While this bonus serves as a significant festive benefit for the workforce, it remains a subject of discussion between labor unions and the government regarding the wage ceiling. The current calculation for the bonus is based on a wage ceiling of ₹7,000, a limit that has remained unchanged since the 2014-15 fiscal year. Employee associations, including organizations like the Indian Railway Technical Supervisors Association, have previously requested a revision of this ceiling to reflect inflation and current economic conditions. Future updates on this bonus structure may depend on the government's negotiations with these labor unions regarding wage policies.
Because Indian Railways operates as a government entity, this bonus is an administrative and fiscal allocation rather than a corporate event for a listed company. Therefore, it does not directly impact the share price of rail-related stocks like IRCTC or RVNL. The primary impact of this announcement is on the operational morale of the railway workforce and the government’s overall fiscal expenditure for the current year. The disbursement process is expected to be completed before the upcoming holidays, aiming to ensure timely delivery of the incentive to the frontline staff managing the country's transportation network.
