TTV Dhinakaran Claims AIADMK Offered TN CM Post to VCK's Thirumavalavan

AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran has alleged that the AIADMK leadership attempted to form a coalition government by offering the Chief Minister's post to VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan during the recent political instability. The proposal, which reportedly failed due to opposition from left-leaning parties, was an attempt to navigate the legislative uncertainty after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam struggled to secure a majority.

AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran has claimed that during the recent period of political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK leadership considered a coalition strategy that involved offering the Chief Minister's position to VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan. This allegation emerges from the intense negotiation period that followed the state elections, when actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) had not initially secured a clear majority to form the government independently.

The proposed maneuver, as described by Dhinakaran, was an attempt by the AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, to navigate the hung assembly and stabilize the legislative environment. The aim was to prevent the poaching of newly elected members and to assemble sufficient support to govern the state, filling the power vacuum that existed before a cabinet was finalized.

However, the plan failed to materialize due to resistance from several political groups. Left-leaning parties reportedly refused to participate in any arrangement with the AIADMK. These parties cited the AIADMK’s perceived past association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a fundamental disagreement, which made such an alliance politically unfeasible for them. Without the support of these necessary factions, the AIADMK’s reported coalition strategy could not proceed.

Eventually, the path was cleared for the TVK to form the government. After several meetings with Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Vijay was invited to take the oath as Chief Minister on May 9, having crossed the required 118-seat threshold with the support of the VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League.

For businesses and the economy, political stability is a crucial factor for decision-making in the state. While this claim provides insight into the back-channel negotiations that defined the post-election period, the government is now fully established. Moving forward, the focus for stakeholders will be on the new administration’s policy direction and its approach to economic development in Tamil Nadu.
