TN CM Joseph Vijay Seeks Diplomatic Help for 25 Detained Fishermen

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to secure the release of 25 Thoothukudi fishermen and three boats detained by the Maldives Coast Guard. This incident highlights ongoing economic risks for coastal communities that depend on regional fishing grounds. The state government is now calling for urgent diplomatic intervention to resolve maritime disputes and protect local livelihoods.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has formally written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, requesting immediate diplomatic action to assist 25 fishermen from the Thoothukudi district. The crew, along with their three mechanized fishing boats, were detained by the Maldives Coast Guard in the early hours of October 13, 2026. This move comes as the state seeks to resolve the detention and ensure the safe return of the workers and their equipment.

Diplomatic Efforts for Coastal Communities

The Chief Minister emphasized that the loss of these vessels creates significant financial hardship for the affected families. For the coastal economy of Tamil Nadu, mechanized fishing is a primary source of income, and the seizure of boats removes the means for these fishermen to return to work even after they are released. The state administration is asking New Delhi to exert stronger diplomatic pressure to ensure that fishermen can access their customary fishing zones without the risk of being apprehended by foreign authorities.

Context of Regional Maritime Disputes

This incident is not isolated, as maritime disputes continue to affect the coastal regions of the state. Earlier this month, a separate appeal was made to address the detention of 20 fishermen and 270 boats by the Sri Lankan Navy. The Palk Bay region, where many families rely on traditional fishing, remains a focal point for these recurring tensions. The repeated seizure of assets by neighboring navies creates long-term instability for the local fishing sector, which relies heavily on consistent access to international waters.

The state government’s current strategy focuses on preventing further incidents by strengthening the diplomatic dialogue with neighboring nations. Investors and stakeholders in the regional economy often monitor these developments, as the health of the fishing industry is closely linked to the stability of these maritime operations. The next step for the administration will involve coordination between the Union Ministry of External Affairs and foreign diplomatic offices to facilitate the release of the detained crew and the retrieval of the impounded assets.
