Surat Textile Market Arson: Accountant Held for Rs 24 Cr Loss

A former accountant has been arrested for arson at Surat's Shyam Sangini Textile Market following a dispute over Rs 10,000. The incident resulted in the destruction of 14 shops and an estimated Rs 24 crore loss. This event highlights the critical need for enhanced security and fire safety protocols within dense commercial textile hubs.

The Surat Crime Branch has arrested 33-year-old Vinod Pandit Sawale for allegedly setting fire to the Shyam Sangini Textile Market. The investigation links the arson to a personal grievance, specifically a dispute over a Rs 10,000 salary payment. The incident, which began in the early hours of September 9, resulted in the complete destruction of 14 retail outlets and significant inventory.

Authorities have estimated the financial damages from the fire at approximately Rs 24 crore. The intensity of the blaze meant it burned for 38 hours before emergency services could fully contain the situation, illustrating the potential for rapid property destruction in high-density commercial clusters. Forensic analysis confirmed that the fire was an act of intentional sabotage rather than an electrical or structural failure, with investigators alleging that the suspect used an accelerant to start the fire.

Following the act, the suspect attempted to evade authorities by traveling through Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh before returning to Surat. He was eventually apprehended near Dindoli. Local law enforcement is currently expanding the investigation to determine if any third parties were involved and is reviewing the protocols of the fuel station where the accelerant was reportedly purchased.

The event serves as a stark reminder of the operational risks inherent in the textile trade, where large volumes of inventory are stored in closely packed retail spaces. For local business owners, the loss of inventory and physical shop space represents a significant disruption to business continuity. The incident has drawn attention to the necessity of improved security and fire safety measures in commercial zones during off-peak hours.

From a business management perspective, the incident highlights the importance of robust insurance coverage and stringent security vetting for staff in critical operations. As investigators continue to piece together the events, the focus for local market associations and shop owners will likely shift toward implementing stricter surveillance and fire prevention audits to protect commercial infrastructure against such vulnerabilities in the future.
