Sensex and Nifty Diverge 0.31% on Aug 13 as New Auction System Adjusts

Indian benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended Thursday with a 0.31 percentage point divergence, with the Sensex rising 0.15% and Nifty falling 0.16%. The gap occurred on the Sensex weekly expiry day as market participants navigate the new Closing Auction System (CAS) introduced earlier this month.

On Thursday, August 13, 2026, India's two primary stock benchmarks experienced a rare split in performance. The BSE Sensex closed at 78,079.96, up 0.15%, while the NSE Nifty 50 finished at 24,395.85, down 0.16%. This resulted in a total divergence of 0.31 percentage points between the two indices, a gap that traders and investors are paying close attention to as the market adapts to significant structural changes.

The divergence occurred against the backdrop of the Sensex weekly options expiry. Market activity was influenced by the new Closing Auction System (CAS), which was officially implemented on August 3, 2026. This system replaced the previous 30-minute Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) method used for calculating closing prices. The current mechanism involves a 15-minute auction session between 3:15 PM and 3:30 PM, designed to improve price discovery for F&O-eligible stocks at the end of the trading day.

While the new system aims to provide a more transparent closing price, its implementation has coincided with periods of increased volatility. As brokers and investors adjust their trading strategies to accommodate the new 15-minute window, differences in buy-side and sell-side activity can lead to temporary fluctuations in how indices close. SEBI has been engaging with brokers to refine the system and improve liquidity, with officials noting that the transition period requires ongoing adaptation from both retail and institutional participants.

Beyond the technical adjustments related to the CAS and expiry day, the broader market sentiment remains pressured by external factors. Rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have added a layer of uncertainty to investor confidence, influencing stock movements alongside the domestic system updates. While benchmark indices showed a divergence, the broader market displayed resilience, with mid-cap and small-cap indices ending the session in positive territory.

The key factor for investors to track in the coming weeks will be how effectively the market stabilizes under the new auction framework. As participation from mutual funds and proprietary traders increases, the impact of the CAS on daily index movements is expected to become more predictable. Monitoring how the system handles high-volume expiry days will provide a clearer picture of whether it succeeds in reducing the volatility typically seen during the final minutes of trade.
