Sensex Drops 682 Points; Auto Stocks Gain Amid Market Selloff

Indian stock markets declined on Wednesday as banking, IT, and pharma stocks faced selling pressure. The Sensex fell 0.88% to 76,788, while the Nifty 50 slipped 0.75% to 24,005. Despite the broader weakness, auto shares like Bajaj Auto rose on strong quarterly earnings.

Detailed Coverage

Indian equity markets faced a sharp downturn in Wednesday's midday session, as investors reacted to rising crude oil prices and global geopolitical tensions. Both the Sensex and the Nifty 50 traded in the red, with widespread selling pressure impacting key heavyweight sectors.

Sectoral Trends and Individual Performance

Banking, information technology, and pharmaceutical stocks were the primary drivers of the decline. State Bank of India fell 2.08%, while Infosys and Cipla also recorded losses of 2.20% and significant margins respectively. In the aviation sector, IndiGo shares dropped 3.16% to trade at ₹5,137.50.

In contrast, the auto sector stood out as a resilient performer. Bajaj Auto emerged as a top gainer on the Nifty 50, climbing 4.86% to ₹10,909. This move was supported by the company's recent quarterly performance, which surpassed analyst expectations, alongside a favorable outlook for its export business. Other defensive consumer-facing stocks like Nestle India and Hindustan Unilever also saw gains, reflecting a shift in investor preference toward more stable segments during periods of market volatility.

Macroeconomic Pressures

Market sentiment is currently being influenced by the rising cost of crude oil, which has crossed $85 per barrel in international markets. Because India imports a large portion of its oil requirements, higher prices can lead to increased inflation and put pressure on the Indian rupee. The rupee was trading near the ₹96.30 level against the US dollar during the session, a factor that often discourages foreign investment in Indian equities due to currency depreciation risks.

Technical and Market Outlook

Market breadth remains weak, with the number of declining stocks significantly outpacing those that advanced. Analysts are currently observing support levels for the Nifty 50 around the 23,900 to 23,920 range. A dip below this zone could potentially lead to further weakness, with the next support identified near 23,750. On the flip side, the index faces immediate resistance between 24,150 and 24,170.

As the first-quarter earnings season progresses, investors are likely to focus on company-specific results to gauge whether domestic demand can withstand these macroeconomic headwinds. The key monitorable for the coming sessions will be whether frontline banking and IT stocks can find stability or if the current selling pressure persists, potentially pulling indices toward their lower support levels.
