Rakesh Gangwal Pledges Additional ₹300 Cr to IIT Kanpur Medical School

IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional ₹300 crore to the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur, bringing his total support to ₹400 crore. The funds are intended for a 500-bed super-specialty hospital and cancer research center. This personal philanthropic move occurs as Gangwal continues to reduce his stake in InterGlobe Aviation, which is currently navigating a challenging financial environment.

Rakesh Gangwal, the co-founder of IndiGo, has announced an additional pledge of ₹300 crore to the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology located at IIT Kanpur. This new commitment, structured as a matching grant to encourage other donors, brings the total philanthropic support provided by the entrepreneur to the institution to ₹400 crore. The project is designed to create a medical hub that combines academic research with clinical practice.

The capital is earmarked for the construction of comprehensive healthcare infrastructure on the institute's campus. Plans include a 500-bed super-specialty hospital and a 200-bed center dedicated to cancer care research. The vision is to integrate engineering, technology, and medical sciences to address critical healthcare gaps in the region, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, by fostering collaboration between researchers and medical professionals.

While this donation is a personal philanthropic initiative, it comes at a time when market observers are closely following the transition of the Gangwal family away from their involvement with InterGlobe Aviation, the operator of IndiGo airlines. Since his resignation from the company’s board in 2022, Rakesh Gangwal has been gradually selling his stake in the airline.

For investors monitoring InterGlobe Aviation, the company has recently navigated a difficult period. In the financial year that ended on March 31, 2026, the airline reported a net loss of ₹2,393.6 crore. The broader Indian aviation sector continues to face pressure from multiple sides, including fluctuating aviation turbine fuel prices, currency volatility that impacts the cost of leasing aircraft, and a highly competitive operating environment. While the donation to IIT Kanpur does not involve company funds, the activities of major stakeholders are often tracked by investors as they manage their portfolios and exit strategies.

The success of the medical school project will depend on the timely execution of construction plans and the ability of the institute to secure matching grants from other contributors. Future updates on the project’s timeline and the institution’s operational progress will be the key developments to watch.
