Pilibhit Voter List Row: 10,470 Illegal Entries Flagged, 2 Officials Under Probe

Uttar Pradesh election authorities have suspended two senior officials and a staffer following the discovery of 10,470 unauthorized voter entries in Pilibhit. The administration has ordered a wider audit of election records processed since April, highlighting significant lapses in administrative oversight and compliance with the Representation of the People Act.

Election authorities in Uttar Pradesh have initiated formal legal and departmental proceedings following the identification of major discrepancies in the voter rolls for the Pilibhit Assembly constituency. The internal investigation, directed by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, centers on 10,470 voter entries approved between May 31 and August 29, 2026. These registrations were processed without the required supporting documentation, raising questions about the integrity of the database.

Administrative Accountability in Pilibhit

The local Voter Registration Centre had processed 13,779 Form-8 applications during the specified period. Of these, 10,470 were approved despite a lack of physical or digital records to justify the entries. In response, authorities have dismissed a computer assistant, Anil Kumar, from service. Additionally, two Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Mayank Goswami and Hemant Chaudhary, are now facing departmental inquiries. These officials held oversight roles for the voter list during the window when the irregularities occurred.

Expanded Audit and Legal Implications

The investigation, which gained momentum following pressure from political groups including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, has prompted a larger cleanup of the database. Allegations regarding duplicate Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers and altered records have led to legal actions under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Chief Electoral Officer has now expanded the audit mandate to cover all Form-6 and Form-7 applications processed between April 10 and October 21, 2026.

For observers, the incident serves as a significant case of administrative failure. The Pilibhit District Magistrate has ordered immediate rectifications to ensure the electoral roll aligns with mandated norms. The ongoing audit process will be a key monitorable, as authorities work to address the procedural lapses and verify the legitimacy of the electoral database before future proceedings.
