The Odisha government has launched widespread relief operations as heavy rainfall and dam releases have caused flooding across multiple districts. Officials have evacuated over 1.4 lakh residents from vulnerable low-lying areas, with relief teams mobilized to support over 7,800 villages affected by the rising waters.
Water Resources Department officials are currently managing outflows from the Hirakud Dam, where 30 sluice gates remain open to control reservoir levels. Data from the Mundali gauge station near Cuttack indicates water discharge at approximately 8 lakh cusecs. While engineers define a major flood event as one exceeding 10 lakh cusecs, the current volume has caused significant stress on the Mahanadi river basin, alongside overflowing rivers like the Subarnarekha and Budhabalang in the northern districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj.
The economic impact of the deluge is centered on agriculture and essential infrastructure. Farmers in the submerged regions face uncertainty regarding the safety of standing crops and horticultural produce. In Balasore specifically, reports indicate that over 3.5 lakh people have been impacted by riverine flooding and heavy siltation, which has disrupted local connectivity and forced the closure of several urban underpasses. Local authorities are now focusing on identifying landslide risks and preparing for post-flood rehabilitation.
