Nifty Gains 0.48% to 24,334; Bank Nifty Stays Flat Ahead of Expiry

Indian markets showed resilience on August 25, 2026, as the Nifty 50 climbed to 24,334.55, sustaining levels above 24,300. While investors eye the 24,500 mark as the next resistance, Bank Nifty remained flat amid caution over global oil prices and geopolitical tensions.

The Indian equity market staged a recovery on August 25, 2026, as the Nifty 50 index closed at 24,334.55, a gain of 0.48% or 115.50 points. The index successfully held its ground above the critical 24,300 level, despite a day marked by volatility. This stability was notable given the caution surrounding the monthly futures and options (F&O) expiry, which often brings sudden swings in share prices as traders close their positions.

While the Nifty showed strength, the Bank Nifty index struggled to find clear direction. It closed nearly flat at 57,514.20, down 0.02%, reflecting a period of consolidation. The banking sector, which often drives broader market movements, appeared to be trading within a tight range as traders assessed global and domestic cues.

Market Dynamics and Global Cues

The day's trade was influenced by a mix of local factors and international news. Investors were particularly cautious regarding geopolitical developments, specifically new U.S. sanctions on Iran, which contributed to concerns over rising crude oil prices. Higher energy costs can pressure inflation and potentially impact the profit margins of Indian companies that rely on fuel for production and logistics. Furthermore, foreign institutional investor (FII) flows remained a monitorable factor, with investors tracking currency stability as the Indian Rupee traded near 95.50–96.00 against the U.S. Dollar.

Key Levels to Watch

For the Nifty 50, the focus remains on sustaining the 24,300 level. If the index maintains this support, traders may look toward the 24,500 mark as the next potential resistance. On the downside, the 24,000 to 24,200 range acts as a significant cushion for the index. Analysts are observing whether the current momentum can hold through the end of the monthly contract.

For the Bank Nifty, the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is acting as a crucial support zone, specifically around 57,250 to 57,300. A dip below this area could signal weakness, while a move above the 57,500 mark would be needed for a clearer upward trend.

Investors may continue to track global market performance, crude oil price movements, and any shifts in FII sentiment, as these factors will likely dictate short-term market direction during the remainder of the expiry week.
