NIIT Rises 4% on New CEO; Hathway Cable Slumps 4.6% on Profit Miss

Indian markets saw mixed trends as investors reacted to leadership changes at NIIT and weak earnings from Hathway Cable. Meanwhile, MRPL stock fell despite a major profit jump, showing signs of profit booking. Aeroflex Industries shares also declined following an expansion announcement, while Cemindia Projects gained ground during its capital raising process.

The Indian stock market witnessed mixed sentiment on October 15, 2026, as investors navigated a busy day of corporate announcements and earnings updates. Broader market indicators felt the pressure, with the Nifty Midcap index falling 0.2 percent and the Nifty Smallcap index dropping 0.7 percent. While the IT sector saw gains, these were balanced out by weakness in PSU banks and energy stocks.

NIIT shares climbed 4 percent following the announcement of Anish Sarkar as the company's new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Sarkar takes over from Pankaj Jathar, who stepped down from the role due to personal reasons. Leadership transitions are often viewed by investors as a potential turning point for corporate strategy, and the market responded positively to the announcement, looking for signs of a renewed growth path for the education and talent development firm.

In contrast, Hathway Cable and Datacom faced selling pressure, with the stock closing 4.6 percent lower. The company reported a 5.7 percent increase in revenue, reaching Rs 567.5 crore. However, a significant 44.3 percent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 10.16 crore weighed heavily on investor sentiment. The drop highlights potential margin pressure, where rising operating costs are outpacing revenue growth, a key concern for investors in the cable and broadband sector.

Market volatility also affected Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL). Despite delivering a strong performance with a 203 percent year-on-year surge in consolidated profit to Rs 1,900.8 crore, the stock fell nearly 6 percent. This reaction serves as an example of market dynamics where positive news is often already priced into the stock. When results are announced, investors sometimes choose to book profits rather than push prices higher.

Elsewhere, Aeroflex Industries shares dropped 5 percent after the company unveiled a Rs 202 crore plan to expand manufacturing capacity for its stainless steel hoses and liquid cooling systems. Large expansion projects often carry risks related to execution, funding, and the time required to generate returns, leading some investors to adopt a cautious stance. On the other hand, Cemindia Projects saw its shares rise 3 percent. The company officially opened its qualified institutions placement on October 14, setting a floor price of Rs 1,158.58 per share, with the offering including a potential 5 percent discount.

Market breadth remained largely negative, with nearly 1,900 stocks closing lower on the BSE compared to 1,305 advances. Investors will likely continue to track how these companies manage their profit margins and execute their announced expansion strategies in the coming quarters.
