The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released the NEET UG 2026 results, naming Aryan Gupta from Punjab and Panshul Bansal from Haryana as joint toppers. Both students secured 715 out of 720 marks in the country's largest medical entrance examination. The agency confirmed that 11.21 lakh candidates have qualified for admissions into medical, dental, and AYUSH programs this year.
Exam Scale and Performance Metrics
The declaration follows a re-examination held on June 21, which was mandated after the original May 9 exam faced cancellation due to paper leak allegations. Despite the disruption, the qualification rate remains steady at approximately 56 percent, with roughly 20 lakh students appearing for the test. Performance data shows a significant increase in high scores compared to the 2025 examination. While no student crossed the 700-mark threshold in 2025, 19 candidates achieved that milestone this year. Furthermore, 1,492 candidates scored 650 or higher, with female students accounting for over 58 percent of all qualifiers.
Operational Changes and Future Format
To manage the tight admission timeline, the NTA implemented a re-engineered results process. By running administrative stages in parallel and separating the handling of answer key challenges from result processing, the agency ensured that the counseling schedule remains unaffected. This logistical efficiency is vital for the medical education sector, as delays in entrance results often create backlogs in college enrollment and academic cycles.
Addressing concerns regarding exam integrity, the government has confirmed plans to transition NEET UG from its traditional pen-and-paper OMR format to a Computer-Based Test (CBT). This shift has been a topic of deliberation between the ministries of education and health, intended to reduce the risks associated with manual paper handling. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues to lead an ongoing probe into the initial paper leak allegations.
Regional Participation and Trends
Geographically, Uttar Pradesh remains the leading state for qualified candidates, contributing over 1.7 lakh successful students. The top 17 performers, all of whom scored above 705, represented a diverse spread across eight states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. As counseling begins, the focus will now shift toward seat allocation processes, with institutions and students monitoring the stability of the new admission calendar.
